Ether Fragments, crystallized emotions, are the source of the Reflectors' powers.

The Ether Fragments get out of control in response to anguish in the hearts of their owners. Besieged by monsters, the Fragments may even shatter, with grave consequences to the owner, even death. The Reflectors' task is to prevent this.

Some Reflectors can stabilize Fragments, and share their power with the Fragments' owners. Hinako is one of them. With the help of her ring, she can stabilize Fragments by understanding the emotions and feelings they represent.

Reflectors must have rings and be able to stabilize Fragments to gain power from them. And they need a lot of power to defeat powerful foes such as the Sephiroth.
